Why Affiliate?

Filed under: Affiliation, OpinionChris Hunt @ 10:22 pm

The papers released after the Coalport meeting give a pretty good picture of the package on offer to affiliated hostelling groups. There is much in it to be welcomed, and the staff at Matlock should be congratulated on listening to some group concerns and acting upon them.

However, there are significant downsides to the current offering too, and even well established groups may be hesitating to sign up under the YHA banner next year. What follows is a breakdown of the main pros and cons of affiliation, please comment if you think I missed anything out…

More Coalport Reports

Filed under: NewsChris Hunt @ 9:18 pm

The staff at Matlock have produced several documents recording the actions that took place at the Coalport workshop and detailing the actions they intend to take as a result. Copies have been sent to all attendees, and also to local group contacts, with the following covering letter from Sarah White, Director of Human Resources:

Dear Colleague

As you will be aware we held a Local Groups event on Saturday 4th November at Coalport. To keep you in the picture I am sending you the following documentation:

You will see from the Draft Actions and Timescales document that there are some issues that can be dealt with quickly or are ongoing, and some will take longer to be addressed. Additionally there will be some issues where YHA will need to seek further clarification or perhaps we aren’t able to change some policies. Where clarification is required, or if you would like to add any items please advise Crewenna who will be asking for your input during the next couple of months.

I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you on behalf of YHA (England and Wales) Ltd., that we are committed to creating a positive and productive partnership with Local groups.

As noted above, groups should have already received these papers in the post, but copies are made available on this site for the convenience and information of other interested parties.

According to The Guardian there are plans afoot to make YHA’s most isolated hostel into their most environmentally friendly:

The most remote mountain refuge in England is to test a sustainability plan that could see supplies depend on a two-hour trek on horse or by foot. Wind power, solar panels and green technology are expected to maintain the walkers’ and climbers’ foothold at Black Sail in the Lake District.
