Berwick – It’s Official
It’s old, old news to readers of this site, but YHA have officially announced their plan to build a hostel in Berwick’s Dewars Lane Granary:
Work is about to get under way on YHA Berwick – the latest and most northerly destination to be added to the network.
The brand new 44-bed Youth Hostel will form part of a £5million restoration project at a derelict Grade II listed building but is not expected to be open for business until 2011.
Developments will be carried out around the Dewar’s Lane Granary – the last surviving grain store in the town, which dates from the mid 18th century.
The project is being led by the Berwick-upon-Tweed Preservation Trust, with generous support from a host of other funding organisations, including ONE North East and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).
The scheme has been more than five years in the making, with valued input from YHA coming from Simon Ainley in his former role as Regional Manager.
When complete, the ground floor will be a YHA cafe/bistro with direct access to the town and quay. Two of the floors will be leased back to the Trust for use as an exhibition area and meeting rooms, managed by YHA, with a new access at second floor level directly onto the historic town wall itself.
Sleeping accommodation for 36 will be on the third and fourth floors in two, three and four-bedded en suite rooms, with lounge and self-catering facilities on the floor above; and a new annexe building will accommodate a further 8 guests in two, four-bedded en suite rooms with disabled access plus staff accommodation.
Sounds fantastic – roll on 2011, I say! Just remember where you first read about it…

And two new hostels for this year just announced. Both on the South Downs – Itford Farm (outside Lewes) and a replacement Eastbourne.
Both due to open this year. I’ve not really explored the South Downs, looks like I might just have to now.
So the new hostel in Berwick is the northern Berwick then not the Berwick just inland from Eastbourne ?
