Elenydd Wilderness Hostels
Deep in the heart of Mid Wales lie T’yn Cornel and Dolgoch, the last survivors of six hostels which once dotted the isolated Elenydd area. This is hostelling as it used to be – an open fire for warmth, gas for lighting and cooking. The addition of a shower is the only concession to 21st century comforts.
But the survival of these hostels depends on the efforts of a committed bunch of volunteers – the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels Trust. Formed after both hostels were scheduled for closure, the trust have already been able to save T’yn Cornel (with the help of two generous benefactors) and are currently raising funds to buy Dolgoch next year.
They desperately need your help, both financial and moral, to succeed in their mission. Why not join the trust and lend them your support!

I have been very critical of the YHA’s policies towards (a) small hostels and (b) the treatment of MEMBERS (e.g exclusion of members to hostels so that schools can have them in term time and exclusion of members to hostels in the summer holidays so that money making group/”adventure” schemes can take over.) I am rather sad, now, that in six months since Chris started this thread, no messages of support and encouragement have come from members reading it.
Dolgoch will close for ever soon unless the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels Trust receives more help NOW. The YHA and Forestry Commission together are involved in selling the hostel, so what the price will be is anyone’s guess.
MEMBERS……if you are a lone hosteller or small group hosteller, YOUR options are being eroded all over the country in favour of packages and large parties and hostel catering profits. Please do something. YHA flags out Black Sail (rightly) with great pride and publicity and asks us for money, but the closure programme needs equal exposure, especially of small traditional hostels. Despite major volunteer contributions in time and effort, YHA no longer acts as a charity working on its stated purpose….and it looks like membership will do nothing to stop it.
