Fire Concerns at Golant

Filed under: Health & Safety, Hostels, NewsChris Hunt @ 1:42 pm

Recent events at Cambridge have brought fire safety very much to the attention of hostellers. Now, it is reported in the Cornish Guardian that Golant YH has been found wanting after a recent inspection:

Faults including inadequate fire detection and warning systems were recorded by the visiting fire safety officers at Penquite House youth hostel.

Escape routes and exits could not be used as quickly and safely as possible, escape doors could not be easily and immediately opened from the inside and escape routes did not have adequate signs.

Firefighters also reported that the escape routes did not have adequate emergency lighting in case the normal lighting circuits failed.

Steps have already been taken to remedy some of these shortcomings, and a specialist contractor is to be called in to complete the necessary work.

Problem with YHA today is from my knowledge too much money is paid to directors and not enough invested in the buildings themselves.

The YHA has paid consultants millions of pounds over the last few years whilst overlooking the basics of what they need to do.

Get a grip YHA, people want safe confortable buildings not posh posters and hype – you need to look at your roots not the Armani suits you now seem to pander too.

Many years ago I used to stay in hostels that were basic, inexpensive and clean. I doubt if a consultant ever got within sniffing distance of them. They do now, though – and it’s reflected in the price of a bednight, which is why I rarely stay in hostels these days.

I would just like to clarify the position at YHA Golant.

The Fire Officers report did find minor non-compliance issues that were addressed immediately. This situation arose out of a call from a disgruntled neighbour to the local fire office who had a sleepless night following a rowdy foreign!!! group staying at the hostel who set off the fire alarm in the early hours of the morning.

To the previous poster, its not Armani in the southwest its wet suits!?!
