Mirror Promotes Hostelling

Filed under: MediaChris Hunt @ 10:02 pm

Taking a break from their election coverage, there was a lengthy article in The Mirror this weekend promoting the joys of youth hostelling. Reporter Chris Drew has been exploring some of the midlands’ hostels in celebration of the YHA’s 80th birthday.

Or course there’s a few stereotypes and preconceptions to be knocked on the head first:

The single-sex dormitories I remember from geography schooltrips have been replaced by ensuite rooms which can work out at as little as £30 a night for a triple.

Duties such as washing-up and cleaning -once required of all hostellers – are now limited to making your bed and stripping it the following morning.

All of this might be hardly news to seasoned YHAers, but it will come as a surprise to others.

I’ve long thought YHA publicity could do a better job of getting this message out, but it’s dealt with pretty clearly here (along with the news that there’s no age limit for hostellers).

The article continues with descriptions of National Forest, Hartington and Gradbach Mill. Admittedly, the focus is more on the attractions of their local areas than on the hostels themselves, but it’s all good publicity. It’s also nice to see a place like Gradbach tempting journalists away from their normal beaten path between National Forest, Hartington, Whitby and the London hostels.
