The Best Hostel in the World?

Independent hostelling website Hostelworld announced the winners of their annual “Hoscar” awards in a ceremony held in Dublin last week. Based on the votes of visitors to their site, these awards pick out the best of the more than 15,000 hostels that they list.

Overall winner was the Flamingo Hostel, an independent hostel in Krakow, Poland. Asked for the secrets of their success, the Flamingo’s Pawel Wawro said ”The first important thing is having the best place, the second thing is atmosphere. That is the best thing you can offer to the customer, to the guest”.

No YHA hostels appear among the finalists, indeed only two HI hostels world-wide made the list: YHA Wellington City was Oceania’s best hostel, whilst HI Chicago was the best large (500+ beds) hostel.

Of course the survey is far from scientific. HostelWorld’s target audience of young international backpackers is different from the family market YHA seems to be targetting these days (let alone young people of limited means). Voters rated the Flamingo at 100% for its location – described as within “spitting distance” of 400 bars and clubs. Whatever would they make of Black Sail?

The full results of the “Hoscars” can be found on the Hostelworld site.
