Two Hostels Saved?
Good news from our friends in the North about two hostels which appeared on the closure list in January. Greenhead hostel has been sold to a private buyer for £175,000 . However, according to local paper the Hexham Courant , the converted Methodist chapel…
will continue to be run as a hostel [...] On Monday, Haltwhistle town councillors said they felt as strongly as Greenhead residents did about retaining the building as a hostel.
Whether the new owner will run the place under the YHA banner is unknown.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the Pennine Way another local paper, disappointingly not called the Craven Newsround, has news of another threatened hostel:
Earby Youth Hostel has been thrown a lifeline after the Youth Hostel Association received an offer it could not refuse from Pendle Council.
The council launched a rescue package for the building, the only youth hostel in the borough, which was due to be auctioned next week and the Herald has now learned it has been withdrawn from sale.
The package includes the purchase of the Birch Hall Lane building for £200,000 and a further £20,000 towards improvements to the property.
“Our offer to buy the building and lease it back to the YHA has been accepted in principle”.
Thanks to sharp-eyed participants in the uk.rec.youth-hostel newsgroup for spotting these stories.
