This bunkhouse (pronounced Cliff PIPE-ard) near Swindon opened last year and seems to have done pretty good business if their guest book is anything to go by. At 14 beds, it’s a handy size for Local Groups and being attached to a pub means it has a handy location too!

The rooms are comfortable (though the dorms are a little cramped) and the kitchen is large and well equipped for group catering. The pub does food too, though the menu is neither very long nor all that inspired. The only fly in the ointment is the warden’s insistence that you take your shoes off before entering the hostel – remember to take some slippers with you!

Walking-wise, Avebury and the Ridgeway are in easy reach, Marlborough and Stonehenge aren’t all that far off. The area looked good for cycling, though I didn’t spot a cycle shed at the hostel.

All-in-all its down for a return visit some time. Hopefully when their carpets are a bit older they won’t be so fussy about footwear.

Good things:
Hostel is warm, plenty of parking space, fridge adequate size, TV and internet, pub next door, owners very knowledgeable about local area.
Not so good:
Owners came across as somewhat tight. Some examples being the £4.50 \”DIY breakfasts\” whereby they give you the bacon, eggs etc and you cook it yourself (or 7.50 if they cook it); the tablespoonful of peas that came as the only accompaniment to our £7 fish pie; the unnecessary level of quibbling over how many eggs one of our party was entitled to with their chips; their declaration on arrival that yes they do take debit cards, then refusing to allow someone to pay for their meal with a card as we were in a group, so leaving them skint (particularly annoying as we had asked specifically, and could have got cash out earlier); charging someone for use of a duvet that they had found under their bed, and used when they woke up cold; complaining that we had used a lot of toilet roll when someone asked for it to be replenished… amusing eccentricities perhaps, but it left me fuming!

Yes, our group also enjoyed CliffPypard Hostel. As for having to take outdoor shoes off to enter the hostel, that seems a good idea to me. If I remember right the rule only applied to the hostel areas, not the pub area and I think the warden provided some overshoes you could wear.
