hi,
i think it is just yet another way the yha raises more income. i say that because it means people who would otherwise self cater are forced to pay more for a hostel breakfast that they dont even want.
i do avoid b & b hostels if i can but when i stay at hostels it is the place i am there for and if there are no other alternative hostels in that area then i dont have a choice. for example i love buttermere but there is only one hostel at buttermere. so if i want to go to buttermere then i have to get the b & b at the one hostel that is there.
i personally believe that within a few years all hostels will be b & b. i actually wouldnt be surprised if they close all self catering kitchens in all hostels.
the yha seems to have the attitude of charging what they can get away with. they seem to think that so long as they are cheaper than all other local accommodation then their business will be safe.
