The President’s Trophy and Awards
The President’s Awards were introduced in 1984 to give recognition to the hard work that many Hostelling and Local groups put back into the Association.
The President’s Trophy is awarded to the Group which produces the best overall effort in the following categories.
The presentation of the Trophy and the individual awards for each category are part of the programme of the Annual Hostelling and Local Groups Conference. The winners of each category receive a commemoration certificate and a cheque.
There are currently eight categories, viz.:
The Best Conservation Project
The project can be limited to a single day’s activities, e.g. litter clearance of a local beauty spot, or spread over several weekends, e.g. planting trees at a number of hostels.
The Best Publicity Campaign
Will be judged on the overall approach, effort, success and originality. It is essential to include samples of your posters, leaflets, newspaper cuttings and photos.
The Best Group Programme
This is judged primarily on the variety and nature of actual events although the aesthetics of the actual printed matter will also be considered.
The Best Fund Raising Effort
This is judged on originality as well as the amount raised. Only fund-raising for YHA causes (e.g. a washroom appeal) can be considered for this category.
The Best Work Undertaken at a Hostel
This can be work completed in one weekend or a project needing several visits. In either case, only one hostel should be involved.
The Best Individual Newsletter or Magazine
This is judged mainly on the quality and balance of the articles, etc. although the aesthetics of the printed matter will also be considered.
The Best New Members’ Package
This is judged on the measures that your group has put together to attract a potential new member into joining and assisting in their integration. This can include items such as information sheets, new members introductory offers, etc.
The Best Hostelling and Local Group Website
This is a relatively new award first introduced in 1999. It is judged on copies taken from your group’s web-site pages. The Entry Forms for these awards are sent out in group post each September.
